"If the World Were a Village" Children's Festival

"If the World Were a Village" Children's Festival is geared for younger families during Global Citizen Kelowna Week. The United Nations' Millennium Development Goals are introduced to children in interactive and creative ways. It has been a very popular event and, judging from comments from parents and smiles and interest of children, successful in giving children an appreciation of our global diversity as well as the challenges of global poverty.

Over a dozen humanitarian organizations are hosting separate activities. Each 'booth' is both representative of the global issue presented and a necessary 'building' within the community. For example, the Bicycle Shop, hosted by Bicycles for Humanity, lets kids challenge their parent to a bicycle race! The Medical Clinic is an African hut where there is a limited supply of candy 'medicine'. The 'Beauty Salon' looks like India and children can receive henna tattoos and have their hair 'done' various colours - while learning about street children. Gifts to Grandmothers, Ten Thousand Villages and The Kelowna-Zambia Partnership will have items for sale in the Village Marketplace and children will be able to weave their own basket, do some beading or try playing a foreign musical instrument! Children visiting the Hope for the Nations Art Gallery can have their portrait drawn by a local artist and are encouraged to become a child-sponsor. The teachers in the School House are from Little Women for Little Women of Afghanistan and the children visiting learn about the lack of primary education. Local authors and First Nations storytellers welcome children to the Library. At the Mexican Restaurant the children enjoy making tortillas while being exposed to a feeding program for impoverished children. An outdoor Marketplace has items to buy in support of micro-enterprises. The Music Shop has children learning to play drums from various countries. Live shows at the Village Theatre keep the excitement high or children can attack malaria mosquitoes or fix a bike or play traditional games.

Our world is diverse, creative and fun, but as Global Citizens we also have responsibilities and opportunities to help each other!
